Best places to go to in 2023: Ollantaytambo

January 18, 2023

Every year, Condé Nast Traveler ranks the best destinations to visit. For 2023 one of those places is a place very dear to us, namely Ollantaytambo. The village is best known for its archeological site which sits 2,800m above sea-level atop a high hill. But there’s a lot more to this village. Keep on reading to find out what else can be found here!

History of Ollantaytambo

Ollantaytambo has a very unique and interesting history. The ancient fortress was originally built by emperor Pachacuti in the mid-15th century to bring local tribes under Inca control. However, it was also used as a temple, and agricultural and military center. It served as a defense post against the Spanish due to its strategic location.

The name “Ollantaytambo” comes from the Quechua word “tambo”, a place that provides accommodation, food, and comfort to visitors along their route and “Ollanta”, the name of an Inca army captain. Ollanta was a soldier who was exiled for falling in love with the Inca Pachacuti’s daughter, princess Cusi Coyllur. After a 10-year rebellion, the Inca forgave him and agreed gave his blessing for Ollanta to marry his daughter.

Why you should visit

There are many reasons why you should visit Ollantaytambo. Not only is it the second most well-preserved ruin in Peru, it’s also exquisitely beautiful and captivating. With its rich history, charming old town, and impressive sights, it’s a must-visit for when you’re traveling Peru. Here you can walk in the footsteps of the Incas and learn more about the history of this fascinating country.

The Incas built well-ventilated storehouses (“qollqas” in Quechua) at high altitudes, where lower temperatures preserved their grains against decay

When’s the best time to visit?

Most people would argue that somewhere around January – April and September – December is the best time to visit. It gets quite cold at night in June and July so be prepared with layers and a warm coat. The rainiest months are in January and February. However, the chances of getting good weather are still good during those two months.
