Discovering Peru Through The Eyes Of Travelers

November 22, 2023

In this blogpost, we are going to do something different. We will delve into the captivating journeys of travelers exploring the enchanting landscapes of Peru. In this travel series, we aim to shine a spotlight on the unique stories and experiences of individuals who have embarked on transformative adventures in Peru. Our inspiration behind this initiative is rooted in the belief that every traveler’s tale is a mosaic of culture, discovery, and personal growth.

Through these narratives, we hope to inspire fellow wanderers to embark on their own odyssey, fostering a deeper connection with the world and the communities they encounter.

Meet our first traveler

I am Shrilakshmi Hegde, I enjoy planning and traveling around the world whenever I get time from my 9-5 job. I am an adventurous outdoorsy who likes hiking and trekking on the mountains more than food. Trekking in the Peruvian Andes range is on my bucket list. My favorite mountain range is the Himalayas.

1. What has been the most memorable experience of your trip to Peru so far?

It’s difficult to pick just one because there are many such experiences in Peru. Well, I would say Amazon Rainforest, hiking through Red valley and of course Machu Picchu!

2. How have you found the local culture and traditions in Peru? Any interesting encounters or insights you want to share?

I liked the fact that local culture & traditions in Peru are such an integral part of every day life and how important it is for people to nurture them. We visited one of the Llamas center near Cusco where the local artisans showed us how they make different color dyes and then weaving. It was very insightful.

3. What made you travel to Peru in the first place?

I was always fascinated by Machu Picchu and it had been my dream to visit Machu Picchu one day which was the reason Peru caught my attention.

4. We believe in meaningful connections between travelers and local communities. Were there any specific interactions or moments with the locals that stood out to you and contributed to a deeper understanding of Peru’s culture and way of life?

I was traveling on a tighter schedule so couldn’t interact with locals much except on tours in the Sacred Valley and Amazon Rainforest. I was surprised to see that there are so many fruits and flowers found in those rainforest that are also grown back in my hometown in India. I could feel at home there. My tour guides were local and highly knowledgeable. They explained about the tours, history, local culture and their experiences so profoundly, it was truly amazing. I even bought a Chanaka pendant after knowing its meaning.

5. What advice would you give to future travelers interested in experiencing Peru in a sustainable and community-focused way?

I would say, go with a local tour guide who knows the best. Peru is not just Machu Picchu. Travel beyond Machu Picchu, explore the other gems of Peru which tell you so much about their culture, history and more. Indulge in local culture by visiting the local centers that still practice sustainable and organic way of clothing, dying etc. Come to Peru with an open and curious mindset, you will be blown away for sure!
