Homestays and Community Based Tourism

May 18, 2024

The first time I encountered community-based tourism was in a small village in Kyrgyzstan. As I wandered through the area looking for a place to stay, a sign reading “CBT Kyrgyzstan” caught my eye—it was one of the few in English. Intrigued, I stepped into their modest office, where a friendly man greeted me and asked if I was looking to book a tour, arrange a homestay, or simply gather some information. I told him I needed all three, and he eagerly helped me. What followed was one of the most memorable and enriching travel experiences of my life, staying with a local family and immersing myself in their culture.

After visiting more than 70 countries, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for small, locally owned businesses that not only support the community but also offer travelers a truly unique and authentic experience. My work at Native Tours has deepened my understanding of community-based tourism and its positive impact, and I’d like to share some of the key benefits it provides.

Authentic Cultural Experiences

Community-based tourism allows travelers to dive deep into the local culture and traditions. Staying with local families, participating in their local culture, and learning directly from the community members provide a rich, immersive experience. Unlike the typical tourist attractions, these experiences are genuine and personal, making each experience truly unique.

Economic Empowerment

By choosing community-based tourism, you are able to contribute directly to the local economy. The money spent on accommodations, tours, and meals stays within the community, helping families improve their living conditions and businesses to flourish. This direct economic impact encourages sustainable development and reduces the dependency on external aid.

Environmental Sustainability

Local communities are often more aware of to the importance of preserving their natural surroundings. Community-based tourism initiatives can promote eco-friendly practices, from sustainable farming to responsible wildlife interactions. This focus on environmental stewardship helps protect natural resources and ensures that the beauty of these destinations is maintained for future generations.

Exploring Hidden Gems

Community-based tourism often takes travelers off the beaten path to discover lesser-known destinations, such as the one I visited in Kyrgyzstan. These hidden gems may offer breathtaking landscapes, unique cultural sites, and a chance to explore areas untouched by mass tourism. It’s an opportunity to experience the world in its most authentic form, away from the crowded tourist hotspots, as well as be able to come closer to the local communities, which brings us to…

Personal Connections

One of the most rewarding aspects of community-based tourism is the relationships formed along the way. Sharing stories and meals with local hosts, learning about their way of life, and experiencing their hospitality creates deep, lasting connections. These interactions offer a more profound understanding of different cultures and makes you feel part of the community rather than just a visitor.

Pachamama

Community-based tourism offers multiple benefits for both travelers and the communities they visit. For travelers, it provides an authentic, enriching experience that goes beyond typical tourist activities. For communities, it brings economic benefits, promotes sustainable practices, and fosters a sense of pride and unity. If you want to learn more about the benefits of commnunity-based tourism and the benefits, here is a very interesting article that National Geographic wrote about this specific topic.

Next time you’re planning a trip, consider choosing community-based tourism. Not only will you have a memorable and unique experience, but you’ll also be making a positive impact on the places you explore.
